here is another textbook on service science…

Chang, CM (2010) Service Systems Management and Engineering: Creating Strategic Differentiation and Operational Excellence. Wiley. NY, NY.

The content is well organized from the 1. introduction and then the transition into engineering management (2. planning, 3. organizing, 4. leading, 5. controlling) to business fundamentals (6. cost accounting, 7 financial accounting, 8. marketing management) to leadership (9. SSME leaders, 10. ethics, 11. knowledge management, 12. innovation, 13. operational excellent, 14. globalization).   The cases, examples, and questions throughout are very good.  The appendix of selected case summary and the index of concept are useful reference resources. Paul Maglio suggested two upcoming service science related conference opportunities to consider: ICSOC 2010 and HICSS 2011

ICSOC 2010 is the International Conference on Service Oriented Computing, December 7-10, 2010, San Francisco, California. For more information see:  http://www.icsoc.org. Since 2003, ICSOC has been an excellent forum for academics and industry researchers and developers to report and share ground-breaking progress in service oriented computing.  While keeping its roots in scientific excellence and technical depth of service technology, ICSOC 2010 aims to combine the general technical issues with application and business-oriented aspects of service design, following the recent emergence of service science as an interdisciplinary foundation to rationalize and integrate various aspects of service systems.

HICSS-44 2011 is the Hawaii International Conference on System Science, January 4-7, 2011, in Kauai, Hawaii.  For more information see: http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/futureconf.htm.  Now in its 4th year, the SSME minitrack has already created a body of literature related to SSME — both in the HICSS proceedings and in special issues of the journal Information Systems and eBusiness Management (see Vol 7, no 4, and Vol 8, no 1, 2009; and also a special issue currently in preparation).  Paper deadline is June 15.

Skills Gap A Growing Problem Worldwide, Columnist Writes.

In a column for the Contra Costa Times (4/16), Tapan Munroe writes that there is “a growing gap between skills and education of workers and the needs of employers.” However, “this is not just an American problem, but a problem of the industrial world including China and India.” Munroe notes Manpower Inc’s 2009 worldwide talent survey, which “concluded that nearly a one-third of the employers were experiencing difficulty in filling the vacant jobs.” According to one expert the talent shortage can be attributed to “three major socioeconomic forces,” which are “changes in technology, changes in age demographics, and globalization.” Munroe explains how each socioeconomic force impacts the skills gap, and concludes, “America must rethink its talent-creation system so that it is consistent with the realities of the fast moving 21st century cyber-age economy.”
