Service Science, Progress and Directions

Interest in Service Science, Management, Engineering, and Design (SSMED) continues to grow globally.  Related conferences and journals are continuing to appear on a regular basis (see “conferences” in this blog for some recent pointers).   Prof. Henry Chesbrough of UC Berkeley’s new book “Open Services Innovation” shows how companies in any industry can make the critical shift from product- to service-centric thinking, from closed to open innovation where co-creating with customers enables sustainable business models that drive continuous value creation for customers.

More and more traditional manufacturing is embracing servitization, for example customer integration into a car factory (Germany Urban http://www.flixxy.com/high-tech-car-factory.htm) and  supplier integration into a car factory (Brazil Rural http://apps.detnews.com/apps/multimedia/player/index.php?id=1189).   Managers of service businesses are aware of trends being driven by technological advances, including increase in self-service on front-stage, increase in automation on back-stage, increase in globalization, increase in choice, increase in information.   Interest in service design, management, and engineering are all accelerating in both academia and industry.

However, the biggest opportunities may be in the public sector.   For example in the US, President Obama in his State of the Union speech talked about the redesign of government to make it not only more efficient and less wasteful in service delivery, but also more capable of addressing the complex problems of the 21st century.   More and more governments are finding opportunities to embrace cloud computing and shift to a shared service and shared governance models.   From a service science perspective, there is more interest in “whole service” (https://service-science.info/archives/1056) and holistic service systems, such as luxury hotels (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm7MeZlS5fo), universities, cities, states, and even nations – complex service systems to be sure.  Ambitious projects are underway to model larger and larger systems, both physical and social (http://ijsdir.jrc.ec.europa.eu/index.php/ijsdir/article/viewFile/119/99).

As the conferences, journals, books, and educational programs continue to accelerate the progress of the global service science community, all aspects of service management, engineering, and design are benefitting. The Service Research and Innovation Initiative (SRII) is planning a conference soon in Silicon Valley, California, with several national chapters presenting (http://www.thesrii.org), and keynote speakers from major technology companies presenting.    Readers may also be interested in some recent presentation describing service science progress and directions available at:   http://www.slideshare.net/spohrer. “

Beyond Products: Transforming Through Service

New Emerging Knowledge – Beyond Products: Transforming Through Service

The CSL is focused on designing and conducting cutting-edge service(s) research that delivers both significant business and academic value.  We are pleased to announce a new addition to our CSL website on the topic of “Service Infusion”.  This emerging knowledge is focused on how to get beyond products and transform through service.  The new Service Infusion page has a number of available resources on the topic of service transformation, all of which we hope you find beneficial.

In addition, we invite you to download the new CSL White Paper entitled “Service Logic: Transforming Product-Focused Businesses” by Drs. Stephen W. Brown, Anders Gustafsson and Lars Witell, that discusses at length the challenges and key success factors in an organization’s move from products to services.

CFP 17th Americas Conference on Information Systems

TRACK: Health Care IT
MINITRACK: The Business of Health

MINITRACK DESCRIPTION
As described in Connie Vance and Elaine Larson’s research, Leadership Research in Business and Health Care, most of the literature on health care and business leadership consists of anecdotal or theoretical discussion. Although management and leadership literature points out the fact that leadership styles can have a major influence on performance and outcomes, minimal transfer of this work to the health care system is evident.

The Business of Health is an essential element necessary to facilitate the knowledge transfer from science to the population.  Scientific discovery is only the first step, healthy health systems and policies are also an integral aspect of making sure that the science can deliver all the benefits it has to offer our societies.

With limited resources and capacity there is a need to ensure that economics, management and systems enhance our ability to deliver better outcomes in terms of improvements in quality of life and well-being.

Taking medical science from the laboratory to the patient requires innovative cost-effective, well-managed procedures and systems and this the key focus of the business of health.

Business academics working with medical scientists, health care professionals, and policy makers can make a real difference in terms of the ability to turn theory into practice to the benefit of society. In their extensive literature review, Vance and Larson found limited research on leadership and health care outcomes, such as changes in patient care or improvements in organizational outputs, and concluded that “in this era of evidence-based practice, such research, although difficult to conduct, is urgently needed”.

The Business of Health mini-track solicits papers that focuses on many traditional as well as contemporary healthcare management areas, including, but not limited to:
Understanding the success or failure of e-Health initiatives in different parts of the world
Value Driven e-health Solutions
Implementation and communication challenges of delivering health initiatives (e.g. vaccination)
Public health education
Patient-centered versus transaction-based healthcare services
Current or future capabilities of healthcare system to cope with pandemic outbreaks
Best practice models for volunteer health workers
Modeling and simulating (e.g. that of patient care processes)
Design and implementation of healthcare information systems
The business of illicit drug (e.g. tobacco or alcohol) consumption
Child health in developing countries
Economic drivers of health
