Ducks are capable of some rather deft moves of dodging and weaving, but largely follow a fairly straight path on takeoff; hence, it's pretty easy to aim ahead of them with some assurance that you'll have duck for dinner. Predicting the future, however, is more like trying to swat a fly out of the air mid-flight; it's much wiser to let it settle somewhere before deploying the swatter.

Martin Haeberli:

a) Jim Barksdale used to say: "when duck-hunting, it is important, ALWAYS to remember, aim ahead of the duck!"

b) a big question here is: "where the heck will the duck be"? (That is, what do learners need to learn now to be ready in future?) Well, maybe a sort of obvious meta-answer is: learn how to learn... and learn how to learn how to learn.

c) maybe a kind of answer is that learners now need to be able to adjust their aim, like a wire-guided missile, on the fly...

Thanks again, all, for a wonderful conference!

Jim:

Thanks to Jim and everyone at IBM for putting together yesterday's conference. Will more (or all) of the presentations be posted here, hopefully in one convenient area? Seems that most of the presentations aren't here.

Thanks,

Listen to the six minute NPR interview.

Read the California Human Development report 2011.

These are the issues policy makers must confront head on.

What tools do they need to be effective?

Then substitute "inspired next generation who will build it better" for policy makers.. That is where we might get to.
